Wazumbi, the bandleader of Ghana’s celebrated Afro-fusion group Wazumbians, has made a striking claim during a recent television interview, stating that he personally taught award-winning artists Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale how to sing in their early years.

The statement came during an interview on Voice of the Nation TV, hosted by Barry Murphy and Jerry K, where Wazumbi was discussing the influence of traditional Ghanaian music on contemporary stars.

“Before they became who they are today, I walked them through singing,” Wazumbi asserted on the programme.
“I helped them with melody, harmony, timing, and performance. They came through me.”

The surprising revelation has sparked conversation across Ghana’s creative circles.

Formed in Accra, the Wazumbians are known for a powerful musical identity built on:

  • Traditional Ghanaian rhythms

  • Highlife foundations

  • Afrobeat fusion

  • Energetic brass and percussion

Their performances are a blend of culture, dance, and storytelling, making them favourites at cultural festivals both in Ghana and abroad.

According to Wazumbi, his contribution to the musical foundation of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale happened before their rise to fame, during periods when they were still learning vocal control and stage craft.

He added:

“Some people see the success now, but they don’t know the roots. Before the big stages, there was training. And I was part of that journey.”

While neither Stonebwoy nor Shatta Wale has yet publicly responded to the comment, the claim has generated interest because of the bandleader’s long history in the Ghanaian music ecosystem.
